Why did you become a member of the NYANP?
I am a proud member of the NYANP for many reasons. Initially, I joined as a new naturopathic graduate who was interested in supporting state licensing efforts through the financial contribution of membership. Over time, I had the opportunity to attend our annual conferences and experienced that membership was also about meeting naturopathic colleagues here and cultivating a sense of community with others who have very similar and yet unique experiences working in this large diverse state.
Membership provides me the opportunity to grow my referral and resource networks as well as helps prospective clients/patients find me through the NYANP website’s “Find a ND” feature.
In the last year, I have participated more actively as a Board member, getting to see firsthand just how much is going on inside the organization. This role has allowed me to work with colleagues to engage directly in ongoing legislative efforts and to connect with and grow our naturopathic community here. The Board is leading efforts to expand statewide membership, offer more educational opportunities and provide more services and resources. I’ve no doubt that member benefits will continue to increase; especially as more people join the NYANP and get involved!

Why did you become a member of the NYANP? How is it valuable to you and/or your profession?
Naturopathic medicine is a small field in New York, where many of us are entrepreneurs who more-or-less figure it out for ourselves. I think it's really helpful to be in community with fellow NDs to share resources and support one another. As a member, I also support the legislative efforts made by our board to advocate for greater scope of practice for naturopathic medicine in our state.
Why did you choose naturopathic medicine?
While on a pre-med track in undergrad, I minored in environmental science and found myself lit up by studying the natural world, especially botany. I began to study medicinal plants and learned about naturopathic medicine - which I found intersected human and environmental health in a way that made a lot of sense to me. It still feels really exciting to me to introduce my mostly city-dwelling patients to natural medicines they can integrate into their lives.
How are you currently using your ND degree? What is your position?
I work with patients in my private Brooklyn-based naturopathic clinic, Umbel Health. I also work with many clients virtually who are located throughout the country. My practice sees adults of all ages for a myriad of concerns, but especially appeals to women seeking support for gut and hormone related issues. These are SUCH common areas for dysfunction, and so well served by a holistic approach.
What is your clinical and practice background?
After graduating from the National University of Natural Medicine in Portland, OR, I returned to the east coast to complete a residency at Remede Naturopathics in Manhattan. I started my private practice immediately after, and have been serving Brooklyn for 5 and a half years now.
Do you have any words of wisdom for recent ND graduates?
Believe in yourself and find people you are aligned with. If you find a way to connect with people (clients or coworkers) you are inspired by or relate to, it makes the job really interesting and a reciprocally supportive experience. Also, be patient. It can take years to grow a practice but people will come when you practice with integrity.
Of the six principles of naturopathic medicine, which one resonates most with you?
Treat the Whole - I take a constitutional approach to health - we all have health tendencies and recognizing a person's patterns always helps guide my suggestions. Circumstance change (moving, new job, relationship change, etc) also often dictates a person's health journey. Beyond the mind-body connection, we are heavily influenced by the health of our collective and environment. Treating the whole means not losing the forest for the trees - supporting the person's overall constitution and sometimes creating space for lifestyle change often shifts things in a way treating symptoms cannot.
Name something that brings you joy.

Why did you become a member of the NYANP?
Being an NYANP member is one of the primary ways I support naturopathic medicine in New York. To me, it doesn't make sense to be practicing here and to not support the organization that tirelessly represents and fights for us. For me, it's less about what I get from the organization and more what I can give because it is in giving that we are going to be made stronger as a profession. We all need each other, as much as we can give of our time and resources. We are a small but mighty group in this state; anything we can do to work together and combine our efforts will only serve to build each and every one of us up and lend legitimacy to the work we do day in and day out.
I love that my financial contribution supports our efforts in New York, as well as the annual conference, which is a terrific time of coming-together for NDs in our state. I've been practicing for a decade and I absolutely love my practice and my patients; but I can sometimes feel disconnected from my colleagues. I joined the board this past year not only to contribute what I can to our profession but also to find ways I can bring us together as physicians and friends. Never has there been a time when our medicine is more needed. The NYANP is here for us and I hope in the upcoming months we will find ways to come together more and more, supporting one another and supporting naturopathic medicine in New York.

Why did you choose naturopathic medicine?
I chose naturopathic medicine based on a combination of personal experiences and professional background. As a former registered pharmacist, I saw patients suffer from conventional medication side effects, prompting me to seek safer alternatives. A pivotal moment occurred when my son's recurrent otitis media was resolved through dietary changes suggested by a naturopathic doctor, solidifying my belief in holistic care. My mother's successful battle against stage 4 colon cancer using natural therapies further demonstrated the body's healing potential. A patient's severe high blood pressure was effectively reduced using Electro-nervous system balance therapy (ENSBT), highlighting the efficacy of natural approaches. This journey underscores my commitment to providing comprehensive, personalized, and natural care to promote well-being without relying solely on conventional interventions.
How are you currently using your ND degree? What is your position?
Currently, with my ND degree, I am leveraging my expertise and knowledge to guide patients towards achieving optimal health through natural means, free from unnecessary suffering and side effects. As a naturopathic doctor, my position allows me to empower individuals to take control of their well-being by emphasizing preventive and holistic approaches to healthcare. Through personalized treatment plans, I work closely with patients to address their unique health concerns, utilizing natural remedies, lifestyle modifications, and nutritional guidance. My role as an ND enables me to foster a deeper understanding of the body's innate healing abilities and promote sustainable, long-term well-being for those in need.
What is your clinical and practice background?
I am a highly experienced and dedicated practitioner with a focus on holistic family health, integrative oncology, and anti-aging strategies. My practice emphasizes pain management through rapid, effective treatments yielding significant relief within minutes. Specializing in cases where conventional medicine falls short, I provide comprehensive care. My achievements include being an invited Cancer Guest Speaker at esteemed events, such as the World Cancer Congress, International Congress of Cancer & Clinical Oncology, and National University of Singapore. I have been featured on reputable media outlets like NBC News and the Today Show, establishing my credibility. Additionally, I've served as a Care Partner at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, underscoring my dedication to oncology.
Why did you become a member of the NYANP? How is it valuable to you and/or your profession?
Joining the NYANP (New York Association of Naturopathic Physicians) was a strategic decision, offering substantial advantages to both my professional growth and the advancement of naturopathic medicine. The association provides a robust platform for networking and knowledge sharing among peers, ensuring I stay updated with evolving practices through continuous education. NYANP's advocacy initiatives bolster the field's recognition and integration within mainstream healthcare, expanding our scope and enhancing patient accessibility. This affiliation enhances my credibility, solidifying patient trust in my commitment to high standards. In essence, NYANP propels my career while promoting naturopathic medicine's acceptance and influence across New York.
Who has been the most influential person to you on your naturopathic journey? Why?
In my naturopathic journey, my most influential figures have been my professors at Bastyr University, particularly Eric Jones ND and Jim Chan ND. Not only have they excelled as educators, but they have also become invaluable mentors and friends. Their unwavering passion and empathy for naturopathic medicine have profoundly shaped my patient-centered approach. Their expertise in holistic healing and dedication to natural patient care have ignited my pursuit of excellence. Their guidance has fueled my passion for naturopathy and my commitment to improving the well-being of my patients.
Of the six principles of naturopathic medicine, which one resonates most with you?
Among the six principles of naturopathic medicine, "Treat the Whole Person" resonates most deeply with me. As a naturopathic doctor, I prioritize addressing the underlying causes of health issues, considering the intricate connections among organs and systems. This guides me to provide holistic care that enhances the body's natural healing abilities. I value each person's uniqueness, aiming to support not just physical health but also mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Embracing this principle ensures my approach is comprehensive, aligning with naturopathic philosophy to prioritize the whole person over isolated concerns.
